Keynote Speakers Announced

Orlando, FL (June 19, 1999) -- A number of sleep professionals will be making keynote addresses at the 13th Annual Associated Professional Sleep Societies meeting held in Orlando Florida, June 19-24.  Speakers announced to date include:

Dr. John Stradling

Consultant Chest Physician John Stradling will lecture on Tuesday, June 22nd on the topic "Sleep Apnea, Arousals and the Cardiovascular System".  Dr. Stradling's research interest in methods of diagnosis of sleep apnea have led him to conduct unique experiments in order to explore the consequences of this disorder on the blood pressure and the heart, as well as new methods of diagnosis and the response to treatment.  Professionally, Dr. Stradling has been Chairman of the British Sleep Society and an editor for the Clinical Science and Journal of Sleep Research.  He is also the founder of the Sleep Apnea Trust Association, a patient support and pressure group in the United Kingdom.

 

Dr. Joelle Adrien

Sleep research scientist Dr. Joelle Adrien will lecture on Tuesday, June 22nd on the topic "Sleep, stress and depression: the serotonin track".   Adrien's research interests include study of sleep regulation; sleep depression; and serotonin, a chemical produced in the brain that regulates mood, sleep, pain, and numerous body processes.  Dr. Adrien has been Chairperson of the Scientific Committee of the European Sleep Research Society and is the former President of the French Sleep Research Society.

 

Dr. Sonia Ancoli-Israel

The keynote scientific speaker on Monday, June 21, will be Dr. Sonia Ancoli-Israel, professor at the University of California, San Diego and board certified Director of the Sleep Disorders Clinic in San Diego, California.  Dr. Anoci-Israel's presentation entitled "Sleep in older populations: progression from the old to the old-old" will focus on the hypothesis that sleep disturbances in the elderly are not directly a function of age, but rather a consequence of many things which effect normal sleep patterns.

Dr. Ancoli-Israel is currently doing research on the sleep disorders of nursing home patients and possible treatments for alleviating many common disorders.   Other research interests include Sleep-Disordered Breathing in the elderly and patterns in the aging.  Dr. Ancoli-Israel's over 200 publications include a book "All I Want is a Good Night's Sleep", written for the general public.

 

Dr. Robert Y. Moore

Dr. Robert Moore will lecture on Tuesday, June 22nd at the 13th annual APSS meeting on "A circadian symphony: The neurobiology of daily rhythms".  He has been involved in research of circadian rhythms, the daily force that has the power to influence human sleep and wakefulness for more than 30 years.

 

Astronaut Dafydd "Dave" Rhys Williams, M.D.

The opening address of the 13th APSS meeting will be presented by astronaut Dave Williams, Director of the Space and Life Sciences Directorate at the Johnson Space Center.   Dr. Williams presentation is entitled "Sleep in Space".  Dr. Williams is an experienced astronaut and specialist in emergency medicine, who flew on the Space Shuttle April 17 - May 3, 1998.
